Environmental Funding Navigator

The Environmental Funding Navigator is a dynamic, evolving resource designed to help communities across New England access funding for environmental work. The Navigator features an expanding list of grants, loans, tax credits, and other financing options to support your organization’s mission and project goals. The Navigator is easiest to use in the full screen version, which can be accessed by clicking the button below or clicking “View larger version” in the bottom right corner of the embedded database.

User Guide:

Filters allow the user to refine the list of funding opportunities so that only the most relevant opportunities are shown.

  • Click on the “Filter” button at the top of the database.
  • Click “Add condition” to add a new filter.
  • Select an operator (e.g. “contains,” “is.” See “tips and tricks” below for more guidance on operators).
  • To delete a filter, click on the “Filter” button again and use the trash can icon to clear that filter.

Tips and tricks

  • The database uses different operators to filter results. Some of the most useful ways to sort entries are the operators “contains,” “is,” and “is not.”
  • When filtering with contains, it will provide you with all results that contain the aspects you have selected or unselected. Contains is the filter that is the most useful and will provide you with the most applicable results without missing opportunities. Contains is best used for filtering areas that have multiple selections, such as topic or geography.
  • Is will give you opportunities that are only with that exact value you are filtering for. This is useful when you need an opportunity to have specific information that is non-negotiable. For example, if you needed an opportunity that would get you $50,000 or more, you could filter grant floor is $50,000 and set the grant floor to $50,000. The use of is when filtering may not be useful for areas with multiple selections, as you may end up missing some opportunities.

Grouping allows the user to sort the list based on different categories. For example,

  • Click on the “Group” button at the top of the database.
  • Select the category you want to group by (e.g. Status, Deadline).
  • The data will now be sorted to group by that category. Click anywhere else on the screen to exit the filter section and view your results.
  • To reset a grouping, click on the “Group” button and select the trash can icon next to the group you would like to clear.

Some users may find it useful to download a copy of the filtered results to use for project tracking. You will need to create a free Airtable account in order to download the data.

Once you have sorted the results, you can export  as a .csv file by clicking the three dots at the top right of the database and selecting “Export data as CSV.” This will download the data in a .csv file (can be opened in Excel or Google Sheets) that you may edit and use for your own purposes. Please note this feature is only available in the full screen version of the database. You must open the full screen version and apply your filters on that page to download the data.
